Bear Activity

Weekly Bear Sightings

This Week

We have had no bears sightings reported for the last 10 days. However, we know that bears are still out and about, and some females with cubs may be at or near den sites. REMEMBER - Bears are very intent on finding food as they try to fatten up before denning for the winter.

Bears are now concentrating on the last of the l berry crops at the mid to upper elevations. However, with the new snow at upper elevations a few bears my switch back to low elevation area in search of fall food sources. This is the time of year that grizzly bear will be moving to valley bottom areas searching for and preying upon weakened adult male elk and moose that have been injured during the rut. Watch for and stay well away from any carcasses during this time period, as bears are very dominant and protective of these fall food sources. The fall is the season when most injury related bear \ human encounters occur as a result of a bear protecting a carcass.

Report all ungulate carcasses and stay clear of all carcasses.

If you see or find a carcass, stay clear, inform other users in the area and report the location immediately to the Jasper Resource Conservation Office (780) 852-6155.

As natural food sources become less abundant, bear may be attracted to alternate food sources, such as human food, pet food, fallen fruit and garbage. Fruit trees in particular, especially crab apples in Jasper townsite, are a powerful bear magnet. Residents are reminded to pick up fallen fruit in their yards and harvest all fruit remaining on trees.

Campers and park residents ensure that you BEAR PROOF your food, garbage and recyclables as they are huge attractants for bears that are on the search for food while moving from one area to another in search of fall food sources.

Thank you for supporting Jasper National Park’s wildlife program.
