Skating on Ponds, Lakes and Rivers
Skating on natural ice in the Rockies can be a wonderful experience, but it also involves some serious risks. Here are some things you should know.

Parks Canada does NOT mark off places for safe skating, or mark potential hazards. If you choose to skate on natural ice, you do so at your own risk.

  • If you are not sure if the ice is thick enough, stay off it.
  • Never skate alone.
  • Don't skate in the dark.

Early Season Snow Conditions
Backcountry users are reminded that early season shallow snow can be hazardous. To reduce the chance of injury, damage to gear and damage to alpine vegetation, snow depth should be about 50 cm or knee deep before you ski or board.

For current snow depths at Bow Summit please check the Banff, Yoho and Kootenay Avalanche Bulletin. For Parkers Ridge please check the Jasper Avalanche Bulletin.

Banff is the first municipality in Canada to introduce an all-hybrid electric transit fleet. Along with their special environment-friendly features, the new buses look special too; they are wrapped in authentic Banff National Park Wildlife imagery. Each bus features a unique back-country view of grizzlies, elk, goats and wolves.

What's a transit "experience"?

Roam encourages visitors to view transit as a convenient, fun and environmentally-friendly way to get around town. Residents and visitors will feel good about their decision to take transit instead of their cars.
